BOTOX® Treatment for Migraines
BOTOX® for tension headache, cluster headache and chronic migraine helps prevent the recurrence of headache in some patients. It is especially effective in alleviating the recurrence of chronic migraine. At Diamond Headache Clinic, BOTOX® is one of the many prescription medications in our preventive treatment arsenal. If you are over 18 years old and suffer from chronic migraine, and you have 15 or more headache days each month with headache lasting four or more hours per day, then you may be a candidate BOTOX® injections for migraines. Your physician will assess your complete medical history, including any other health conditions and all drugs you are taking, before administering BOTOX®.
What Is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is a distillation of botulism toxin, which is a neurotoxin. BOTOX® treatment involves careful injection of dilute BOTOX® into areas of the forehead and back of the head/neck. This causes some chemical denervation that temporarily alleviates over-contraction of some muscles, and may alleviate tension-type and migraine headaches. How does it work? Doctors are not certain why BOTOX® for migraines works, but a few theories have been suggested. For example, it has been theorized that BOTOX® blocks nerves that carry pain messages to the brain; another idea is that it blocks certain chemicals that contribute to migraine.
BOTOX® for Chronic Migraine
When injected into the muscles of the brow, eyes, forehead, side of the head and back of the head (near the neck), BOTOX® has been proven to relieve both the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. Although serious side effects have been reported, BOTOX® treatment for migraines may cause fewer side effects than many of the medications generally used to prevent this condition.
Here is what you can expect from BOTOX® injections for migraines:
- You receive the injections in your doctor’s office.
- BOTOX® is injected into seven key areas of the head and neck.
- Treatment takes about the same amount of time as a regular doctor visit.
- The needles are small and sharp; you may feel tiny pinpricks and experience mild discomfort.
- No daily medication is needed, as BOTOX® is a preventive treatment.
- As with other preventive treatments, you may not see results for several weeks.
- Treatment is required every three months.
How Effective Is BOTOX® for Migraine?
BOTOX® is successful in roughly half of patients who try it, meaning that it prevents up to nine headache days per month. However, it is very expensive, does not work for everyone, and may cause serious side effects or allergic reactions. If effective, the treatment needs to be repeated three months after a successful treatment. Predicting in advance if BOTOX® will work for you is impossible, but it has been widely used when other medications were unable to provide relief. Ask your doctor if treatment with BOTOX® is right for you.
While insurance coverage of BOTOX® for migraines has expanded in recent years, you may still encounter restrictions and prerequisites that must be met prior to approval by your insurance company. If you undertake this therapy without prior certification from your insurance company, you may be held responsible for the entire charge.
