Doctor Frederick G. Freitag is Associate Director of the Diamond Headache Clinic. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and received his D.O. degree at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, at which he serves as Affiliate Instructor in the Department of Family Medicine. Doctor Freitag also serves as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago.
Doctor Freitag completed his residency in Family Practice at Brentwood Hospital, Warrensville Heights, Ohio, and served as a Fellow in the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Headache, at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio. He is board certified by the American Board of Osteopathic Family Practitioners. Dr Freitag is a Fellow of the American Headache Society. He has a certificate of added qualification from the National Board for Certification in Headache Management. Castle Connolly and Chicago Magazine have selected him as one of the Top Doctors in Chicago annually since 2002.
Doctor Freitag joined the staff of the Diamond Headache Clinic in 1983. He currently serves on the attending staff of St Joseph's Hospital/ Resurrection Health Care, Chicago. Doctor Freitag has served on and chaired numerous committees of professional organizations. He serves as Coordinating Editor of Headache and Pain. Dr Freitag is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Headache Foundation. He is also a member of the U.S. Headache Guideline Consortium. He organized and was lead author of the paper from the section of the Consortium addressing inpatient treatment of headache. This paper has become the guideline for inpatient treatment of headache recognized by the National Guideline Clearinghouse, an initiative of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In June 2000, he was an invited faculty participant and guest speaker at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) / National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at a state-of-the-art conference titled, "21st Century Prevention and Management of Migraine Headache”. He continues in his role as co-author of the Preventive medication section of the US Headache Guideline Consortium as well as co-author of the chapter on migraine treatment in Wolff’s Headache and Other Head Pain.
Dr Freitag has been involved in hundreds of clinical trials investigating therapies for migraine and other headache. His work has been instrumental in the development of the majority of treatments that are currently available to headache patients as well as a score of others in various stages of development. His other research interests have examined the role of diet and food chemistry in headache. Other basic science interests include the role of the endorphin/enkephalin and immune system in migraine and cluster headache. These studies have resulted in numerous contributions to the medical literature. Doctor Freitag has lectured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe on headache issues.
Doctor Freitag counts gardening among his outside interests and raises his own grapes for winemaking and vegetables for cooking a hobby he shares with his wife, Lynn Stegner. They are the parents of three teenage girls: Crescentia, Abigail, and Genevieve.
