Head pain is a very disturbing, incapacitating and
fearsome experience. The centers for man's ability to
speak, think and act rationally are located in the brain.
Any symptom, such as an ache or pain, that indicates
an abnormality in the head, is very frightening. Head
pain interferes with the normal functions of the brain
and may severely incapacitate the headache sufferer.
The fears and anxieties aroused by such pain are quite
understandable. Chronic headaches are generally progressive.
In other words, they get worse. Not only does the actual
pain itself increase, but also the anticipation of the
pain begins to exacerbate the problem.
Biofeedback is a formal training program which can,
with daily practice, help to alleviate headache symptoms.
The ultimate goal is self-regulation with the techniques
integrated into the course of daily living. This form
of training includes the headache sufferer as an active
participant in his or her own health care program. The
Diamond Headache Clinic's five-year retrospective study
indicates that 85% of all adults and 90% of all children
who learn both temperature and electromyographic (EMG)
biofeedback techniques show significant symptom reduction
in severity, duration and frequency of headaches.
