Dr. Freitag is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and received his D.O. degree at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, at which he serves as Affiliate Instructor in the Department of Family Medicine. He also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, and is a Lecturer in Medicine (Neurology), Loyola University Chicago/Stritch School of Medicine.

Dr. Freitag completed his residency in Family Practice at Brentwood Hospital in Ohio, and served as a Fellow in the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Headache, at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is board certified by the American Board of Osteopathic Family Practitioners. He has received Subspecialty Certification for Headache Medicine from the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. 

He is a Fellow of the American Headache Society, and has a certificate of added qualification from the National Board for Certification in Headache Management. Castle Connolly and Chicago Magazine have selected him as one of the Top Doctors in Chicago every year since 2002.

He joined the Diamond Headache Clinic in 1983, and now serves on the attending staff of Saint Joseph Hospital, home to the Diamond Inpatient Headache Unit. He has authored and co-authored several key papers and articles on headache and headache treatment, many of which are used as benchmarks by federal agencies and policy makers today.

His work has been instrumental in the development of the majority of treatments that are currently available to headache patients, as well as a score of others in various stages of development.
